Title |
section of lead leg showing file marks |
||
Description |
English: Cast lead alloy short skillet leg with four ribs on the outer face, which extend the length of the leg, and four ribs protruding from the inner face, which only extend half way up the leg. The end that would have been soldered onto the body of the vessel has been filed down on the outer edge and the opposite narrower end has been cut. This looks to have been used as a trial piece in order to test the mould for a more permanent copper alloy leg. Or it may have been used as some sort of repair, as lead is easier to work with, and has to be heated to a lesser degree, but it is difficult to solder it onto a copper alloy vessel and expect it to last.Butler & Green (2003) illustrate a similar short leg attached to a skillet on page 65, No.39, which is dated to the 17th century. |
