English: Section Markers Define Burial Areas |
||||
Description |
English: Square posts with letters mark burial sections P and Q, where rows of uniform marble headstones are surrounded by low turf and scattered trees. Stones River National Cemetery was designed in a relatively symmetrical, radial pattern, with burial blocks divided by avenues to form fifteen burial sections. In 1942, Section P was split by a new avenue that was used to divide it into a northern half, designated for white troops, and a southern half, Section Q, which was designated for African Americans. *Subject: National Cemeteries
