Description Section 27 at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, April 22, 2020. The original military cemetery was located here on May 13, 1864. When ANC became a national cemetery on 15 June 1864, this section became a segregated section for African American service members and civilians. This section was originally called the “Lower Cemetery.” Many of the government-furnished markers here have a sunken shield engraved into the marble, designating Civil War (or Spanish American War) service.
