On 28 June 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, was assassinated in Sarajevo. The Archduke and his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, were shot by Gavrilo Princip, a member of a Bosnian Serb nationalist group. The assassination eventually led to the outbreak of the First World War. A month after the shooting, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, starting a chain reaction of military mobilisations. The above image shows a letter sent from the Secretary of State for the Colonies, Lewis Harcourt, to the Governor General, Arthur Foljambe, 2nd Earl of Liverpool. The letter is a reply to a telegram sent by the Governor General expressing his condolences following the deaths of the Archduke and his wife. Harcourt writes that a copy of Foljambe’s telegram ‘has been forwarded to His Imperial and Royal Majesty who has requested that his warmest thanks may be conveyed for this demonstration of sympathy’ and he signs the letter ‘I have the honour to be, My Lord, Your Lordship’s most obedient, humble Servant, L. Harcourt’.
