An innocent building? .... No. The UK, like many other countries has used underground bunkers for military purposes and some are reserved for government departments & leaders in wartime. The one seen here in Fife, Scotland is, like several others, disguised as a farmhouse on the surface, but underground a 450 foot long tunnel leads to a two-level hardened bunker which is 100 feet underground and is the size of two (European) football pitches This one has been disused for quite a long time, and now is a museum, illustrating what it would have been like when it was operational. The picture was taken a few years ago, but I understand that it's still the same today. The "upstairs" part of the building in the photo is fake. There is a thick slab of concrete above the ground-level rooms to protect from nuclear blast. |
