Detail of second half 19th century Shirvan Kilim

Summary

[edit]
Description This second half 19th century Shirvan Kilim measures 5’2” X 10’5” (158 x 320 cm). This is a lovely Kilim. The wider bands are all on an ivory ground with hooked medallions. The pink color is doubtless from East Turkestan where you don’t see a lot of kilims of this age. The thinner bands are probably cochineal or madder red and plain. In the bottom ivory band on the left side there is a construction of geometric shapes and at the top there are two figures that look like men with hats. Maybe they are, maybe they are not. On the back of the kilim there is a fabric sleeve for hanging. This rug probably didn’t see much time on the floor. All in all, this is a very interesting piece. The condition is very good except for some small holes the size of a dime that could be stitched up.
Date second half 19th century
