Summary
[edit]DescriptionSeaweed factory - geograph.org.uk - 1442400.jpg |
English: Seaweed factory. The seaweed factory has been in operation since 1947, accepting lorry loads of seaweed and drying it in coal-fired tunnel kilns, before milling the dried material to a meal used as animal feed, fertiliser or raw material for further processing. The weed taken in is the Knotted Wrack, Ascophyllum nodosum, which is much in evidence around the islands of Kilkieran Bay 1435587. Approximately 50% of production (around 30,000 tonnes per year) goes to Scotland for refining into alginates and a smaller amount for refining into extracts for cosmetics.
