Eco-friendly seaweed farming to support sustainable economy in East Kalimantan, Indonesia

Summary

[edit]
Description

English: Cultivation of seaweed is one of the abundant biological resources in the waters of Indonesia. The extensive area of seaweed habitats in Indonesia is estimated to reach 1.2 million hectares, making it the largest in the world.

Seaweed cultivation can provide promising economic opportunities for local communities, especially in coastal areas. Apart from being processed as a source of food, seaweed can be transformed into various high-value products such as raw materials for cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and other industries.

Seaweed has the ability to act as a natural biofilter, cleansing pollutants in seawater. Additionally, seaweed can absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) from seawater during its growth. This process contributes to climate change mitigation by reducing the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere.

East Kalimantan is one of the regions with great potential for the development of seaweed cultivation. One type of seaweed cultivated is Eucheuma cottoni. As of 2018, the seaweed harvest in East Kalimantan was approximately 13 thousand tons. Most of the seaweed harvested in East Kalimantan is sold either raw or in a dried state after undergoing a drying process.
