Transcribed from photograph: "From Waterfront. Ca. 1871. Carkeek Album. No. 13. Seattle from the water front about [1868 crossed out] 1871. The four [graded crossed out] opened streets are Madison, Marion, Columbia and Cherry. The first three churches erected in Seattle are plainly visible (from left to right) The "Brown Church" on Second and Madison, the "White Church" on Second between Columbia and Cherry and, the Catholic Church [Lady of Good Help] built by Father Prefontaine, which is now (with additions) standing at the same place. (1904). This photograph is from a sketch by Capt. "Billy" Fife, who was noted in Pioneer days for his sketches." |
