Title
English: Seattle Historical Society members Mrs. Thomas Green, Mrs. Howe and Louise Hanford in costume at Founders Day Ball, 1914
Description
English:

The first Founders Day ball took place on November 13, 1911, on the 60th anniversary of the Denny Party landing at Alki beach. The ball was organized by pioneer builder and contractor Morgan Carkeek and his wife Emily, and was held at their First Hill mansion on Boren Street. The event was a costume ball from its inception; guests were requested to arrive in historic costumes related to early Seattle. The ball became an annual event, and guests were also asked to donate artifacts or documents related to Seattle history. This annual ball led to the formal establishment of The Seattle Historical Society, which was incorporated on January 8, 1914.

Handwritten on mat: Mrs. Thomas Green, Mrs. Howe and Louise Hanford.
