Description |
English: *Subjects (LCTGM): Power plants--Washington (State)--Seattle
The University of Washington Libraries entitled this "Puget Sound Traction, Light & Power Co. steam power plant, 9th Ave. and Yesler Way, Seattle" but this is almost entirely factually incorrect. The 1912 Baist map of Seattle shows this as "City Light Plant" (just west of Seventh Avenue on Yesler Way; the Dorpat and Department of Neighborhoods pages cited here both also cite for this location). According to Paul Dorpat (https://pauldorpat.com/2011/01/08/seattle-now-then-seattle-city-light/), it was the "Yesler Way Substation". According to the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods (https://web6.seattle.gov/DPD/HistoricalSite/QueryResult.aspx?ID=1849995976), it was the original receiving substation in the City Light system, built in 1904-05 and receiving power from the Cedar Falls [hydroelectric] Plant. Superseded by more modern substations, it was retired from that function in 1951. It was retrofitted to function instead as the power dispatching headquarters for City Light's entire electrical distribution system, a role which it served from 1952 until it was demolished in summer 1963 to make way for Interstate 5. Also, presumably this was never a steam plant: no chimney! |
