Summary
[edit]DescriptionSeattle - Wintonia and Club Z.jpg |
The Wintonia Apartments, originally Wintonia Hotel, commonly "The Wintonia", 1431 Minor Ave, Seattle, Washington, USA and (partly surrounded by the Wintonia) Club Z, 1117 Pike Street. The Wintonia Hotel has city landmark status. It is now transitional housing for individuals coming from emergency housing and shelter programs or directly from the streets. Of its 90 units, 45 are reserved for previously homeless men and women who are disabled by chronic alcoholism. It stands as a reasonably unusual program, in that it works with alcoholics without demanding sobriety as a first step. For the Club Z, see Christopher Frizelle, Bleak House, The Stranger, April 12, 2006. That story expected this building to be demolished soon; it wasn't. And I believe that story (by a gay man writing in a quite gay-friendly newspaper) fully justifies my adjective "infamous". The Wintonia is basically on the border between Capitol Hill and First Hill. Pretty much everyone would consider Club Z to be Capitol Hill, but more because of its nature than its location. |
