Description

Item 192798, Historic Building Survey Photograph Collection (Record Series 1629-01), Seattle Municipal Archives.

English: 18th & Yesler, Seattle, Washington, circa 1954. This is just east of what was then Temple Bikur Cholim and is now the Langston Hughes Center, looking east on Yesler. The building at the immediate right (1713-1717 Yesler Way) is still there as of 2020, as apparently is the next one past it (now so altered as to be almost unrecognizable). Probably nothing else in this picture remains. Brenner's Bakery, seen here, was founded in the early 20th century (the current wholesaler Brenner Brothers claim 1902, which is hard to reconcile with when the family arrived in Seattle). This shop at 1803 Yesler dated from about 1925. Later known as Brenner Brothers Bakery, it moved across Lake Washington to Bellevue in the 1970s, and operated there for about two more decades. Other family members were involved in other Seattle area bakeries, at least a couple of which used the Brenner name somewhere on their sign. There is a present-day wholesale bakery Brenner Brothers in Bellevue, and they did buy the name from some people in the family, but no actual Brenners are involved in it.
