Summary

[edit]
Description Sears, Roebuck and Company Complex in Chicago, a national landmark (1906). Or at least what's left of it--a building colloquially now referred to as Old Sears Tower. The tower was actually part of a huge complex for Sears spanning over 40 acres. The complex included a fire station, power station, cafeteria, bank, radio studio, advertising building, and a large athletic complex. An expansion in 1931 provided a headquarters for their newly-formed Allstate Insurance Company, named after Sears' tires. Although there are a few other buildings left in the complex, including the power house, the vast majority has been demolished and its validity as a national landmark has been questioned.
