Leaving this hermit colony astern, the Bear headed for Point Spencer,at the entrance to Port Clarence, on whose shores the reindeer stationis located. As we neared land, huge floes of drift ice were encoun-tered; the officer of the deck went to the crows nest, and at slowspeed the captain and the first officer carefully guided the vessel onher course. When the larger pieces of ice were struck, she would quiverfor an instant from stem to stern like a thing of life. On roundingPoint Spencer, the whaling fleet was seen riding at anchor with flagsflying in honor of the arrival of the Government vessel. The whaling fleetusually leaves San Francisco in January, and it is their custom togather at this point about the 1st of July before entering the ArcticOcean to meet the steamer sent from San Francisco with a fresh supplyof provisions and coal. Soon after anchoring, the captains of thewhalers began arriving, in order to get their mail; for among other goodoffices the Bear brings up the annual mail for the whalers, traders,teachers, and others in the Arctic regions of the United States, Greatbundles of letters and papers were piled on the captains table, whichwere carefully scanned, each man j)icking out those that belonged tohimself or his crew.
