ercent rejected. Minus the wigged 4-year-olds, 88 per cent turned out. This tally of the final killing of the season at the Southwest Baykilling ground of Zapadnie shows that extraordinary scarcity of hoUus-chickie in a most lucid manner when contrasted with the other drivesof this year, which I have tallied on this once-famous rendezvous. Thislast scrape made here to-day was opened by the appearance of only1,192 animals on the grounds after a rest of nine days since the lastdrive; 115 of these 1,192 seals were old hulls, all over 6 years, and mostof them 7 and 10 year olds, and all the balance, outside of the 241 ani-mals knocked down, were yearlings, chiefly, a few runty 2-year-olds,a few bitten 4-year-old wigs, and a few 5-year-olds. Every 4-year-old ^^ wig was talen, as at Polavina yesterday, for the first time thisseason. Every smooth 4-year-old was taken in the first drives andnow, the dregs are drawn also! These young bulls vary remarkably in this matter of being with Plate 46.

The smooth or uuwigged 4-year-okl is a fine skin, but the wigged 4-year-old is a poor one. ) Thus far this season until yesterday morning, I observed that fromthe beginning though every smooth 4-year-old was clubbed, yetevery wigged one of that age and upward was never taiien unlessstruck down by accident. ■ I have seen once in a while a 3-year-old so wigged as to be a reallypoor skin; but that is a rare example when found of this age, and, forthat matter, the wigged 4-year-olds do not number one-tenth of theirclass as they grow up. JtilyW, 1890, 4.30 a. m.—As I go over to the Bush at the East Land-ing 1 observe that not a single young male seal is on Zoltoi sands thismorning—not one has hauled there thus far this season. I leave for St. George Island on the Bush at 5 a. m., arrive there at11 a. m. FIELD NOT
