Title
Seal Matrix
Description
English: A small, copper alloy seal matrix with an oval face with rounded ends. There is a central rib running the length of the back and the rib is damaged where there was possibly a suspension loop. Central device of a long-beaked bird with mottled chest looking back over its shoulder whilst walking forward (compare NMS-D3E560).

The inscription around, between beaded borders, has been read as *S' RICARDII' EVYLDE or S' RICARDIY EVYLDE, but in fact the V starts with a double line and should therefore be a W. It is possible that the YE is a single word with the Y representing a 'th' sound (the Old English letter 'thorn') - compare SF-96F006 and IHS-6DA720.

This would result in a reading of *S' RICARDI YE WYLDE which can be paralleled in Reaney and Wilson, under Wild; they note a William le Wilde and a Henry le Wylde and interpret the name as meaning 'wild, violent'. The names are dated 1177 and 1236 respectively.
