Seal Matrix: Unfinished, Pope Gregory the Great
Description
English: Copper alloy vesica-shaped (pointed oval) seal matrix, back unseen. Device of a tonsured monk in Benedictine garb standing on a plinth, holding a book in his right hand, a papal crozier (three cross-pieces just below hook of crozier) in his left. An eight-pointed star is on the right of the figure, an upwards-facing crescent on the left, both approximately at the monk's hip height. Figure is Pope Gregory the Great (540-604). Device in very good condition, separated from the legend area by a fine line. No evidence of any lettering ever having been present. Measurements: approx. 72 mm x 84 mm [Note that this is a scan of the matrix face?]
