Summary
[edit]DescriptionSea caves in the Porthorion headland - geograph.org.uk - 604470.jpg |
English: Sea caves in the Porthorion headland Pen Llyn was a notorious smuggling area with the local gentry (respectable landowners and magistrates during "office hours") playing an active role in encouraging such activities and cunningly pulling the wool over the eyes of the Revenue men. Many a Llyn family of gentle birth, including those of Bodwrda, Bodfel and Castellmarch, feathered their nests with the proceeds of smuggling. It is not hard to imagine these coves and caves being used by the smugglers. Some of the more unusual items smuggled included Irish salt and Welsh language almanacs published in Dublin (there was a tax on almanacs).
