[edit]DescriptionSea Vixen of 892 NAS on USS Forrestal (CVA-59) c1962.jpg |
A Royal Navy de Havilland Sea Vixen FAW.1 from 892 Naval Air Squadron, assigned to the aircraft carrier HMS Hermes (R12), sits on deck of the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Forrestal (CVA-59) in the Mediterranean Sea, circa 1962. The U.S. Navy carriers Forrestal and USS Enterprise (CVAN-65) were conducting joint operations with Hermes and HMS Centaur (R06). NOTE: the original caption appears to be in error. This is a smaller version of the image found at the IWM which states the aircraft is aboard HMS Hermes during the "Shop Window" exercises in 1961. This is also suggested by the double-line under the nosewheel, a type of marking used on some British carriers to indicate the path of the catapult. Nothing similar can be found on images of the Forrestal, where the catapult lanes are unpainted and the landing area uses solid lines on the sides, although these later changed to the "ladder" markings which are also unlike these. Several other details also suggest this is Hermes; the crew are not wearing US deck helmets, there are custom crew ladders which would be unlikely to be found on a US ship, and the start cart is a UK design, although this was also found on some US aircraft. |
