[edit]DescriptionSculpture sundial by Graeme Mitcheson atop the Hafod Bing - geograph.org.uk - 71032.jpg |
English: Sculpture sundial by Graeme Mitcheson atop the Hafod Bing. The sculpture of a miner at work in the colliery placed as the gnomon of the sundial. An extract from this site follows:
The Sculpture takes the form of a sundial which represents the historical significance of the site as a former colliery and also celebrates the sites new use as a haven for wildlife and recreation. It is the creation of artist and sculptor Graeme Mitcheson who worked with pupils from Johnstown Junior School and Ysgol Rhiwabon. The children carved some of their drawings into the sandstone boulders that will form the hour markers for the sundial. The centrepiece of the sundial, known as a gnomon, will be in the form of a miner working down the pit. Inspiration for this piece came from an old picture of a miner at Hafod Colliery in 1952 and organisers have tried hard to identify the miner but to date he remains anonymous.
