Description |
English: Sculpture of Buddha Muchalinda, NUS Museum, National University of Singapore, 21 Lower Kent Ridge Road, Singapore. Buddha sitting on a 7-head cobra (snake). Both hands are in the dhyana mudra position. This is a “seated sculpture of the Buddha under the hoods of naga Muchalinda, an important event from Buddha’s life and frequently represented in the Khmer region. This circa 12th-century image is sculpted with great precision and details, suggesting that it may have been painted at some point in the past. It depicts Buddha in ‘dhyanasana’, performing penance: a naga king by the name of Muchalinda gave him shelter from a rainstorm during meditation, six weeks after his enlightenment. “While retaining some features of the serpent, the naga has become a kind of throne for the Buddha, who is much more the universal monarch than the peerless religious teacher. The headdress, with its conical crown, is that of divinities decked out like the kings of Angkor; the hair is plaited not curled; and the torso appears to be completely naked, as if the convention of the transparent garment has been carried to the extreme.” (Past, Present, Beyond: Re-nascence of an Art Collection, Page 33) |
