Description
English: Pair of mounted scrimshaw bullock horns Believed to have been made by Irish born John Dunn who served with the 70th Regiment in India during the period of the Indian Mutiny, came to New Zealand aboard the Minden, in 1861 (left Calcutta on 4.3.1861, arrived Auckland 27.5.1861). The 70th Regiment, known as the ‘Glasgow Greys’ was initially stationed at Otahuhu, and later took part in actions in Taranaki (1863 and 1965), Waikato (1863-64), and on the East Coast (1865). They left Auckland in January 1866, returning to England. John Dunn born in Ireland at Boyne in 1824, joined the British Army on 5.5.1842, as a Private (service no 1789) and took his discharge (to pension) in Auckland on 1.1.1865 after 23 years service and received a land grant in Panmure. John Dunn died in 1902 and is buried in Silverdale.
