Text Appearing Before Image:
Horses Loading on a Special Horse-box. a morning in a first-class coanpartment, and his wife going by the same trainthird-class ; and an American living inone of the suburbs told me how oftenEnglish women had spoken of thecourtesy of her husband in leaving hisfirst-class compartment and coming tosit with them in the third-class. An high speeds of the first sort, the UnitedStates seems just now to hold theworlds record. Neither England norany other country in the world has anytrains as fast /b? fhe dixfrnwe as theEmpire State Express, which runs 4-40miles at 50.7 miles an hour, includingfour stops ; or as fast for the dlstonce
Text Appearing After Image:
o RAILROAD TRAVEL IN ENGLAND AND AMERICA 409 as the defunct Exposition Flyer of lastsummer, which ran 964 miles at 48.2miles an hour, including nine stops. Among the very fast special runs wefind the following pretty authenticrecords of performances in the UnitedStates, which, so far as I know, havenot been equalled in England since arun made on the Great Western, in1848, of 53 miles at 68 miles an hour ;and that was not up to the best ofthose given here. September, 1891, onthe New York Central, New York toEast Buifalo, 436 miles, at 59.6 milesan hour, including three stops ; 1892,same railroad, 21J miles at the rate of72.7 miles an hour, no stops ; Pennsyl-vania Bailroad, 1891, Jersey City toWashington, 227 miles, 54.3 miles anhour, two stops; New York Central,1893, 80.4 miles at 68.5 miles an hour,no stops. For veiy short distances we find norecord in England at above 86 miles anhour, which speed was probably touchedon the North Eastern, in 1890. Wefind, however, in the United State
