of the bell madea curious accompaniment to the musicof the dogs, as they burst from a thick-et of scrub-pine and persimmon bushesthat crowned the farthest hill on theleft. There was a short pause as theleading dogs came into view—a littlebobble, as INIr. Collingsworth phrasedit—and they deployed about very rap-idly, knowing by instinct that they hadno time to lose. Old Blue, the Colonelsdog, was still with the leaders, andseemed to be as spry as any of them.It was Old Blue, in fact, that recoveredthe drag a little to the right of thepoint where the dogs had made theirappearance. The chase then swervedsomewhat to the right, and half-waydown tlic hill the dogs took a runningjump at a ten-rail fence. AVhalebonetook it in grand style, knocking thetop-rail off behind him. Rowan andMusic went over easily, but Old Bluehad to scramble a little. He made upfor lost time when he did get over, and^lary grew enthusiastic. She declaredthat* hereafter Old Blue should betreated with due respect.
