Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A vowel chart with Liverpool English (Scouse) diphthongs, excluding FACE and GOAT. Originally created by Mr KEBAB, I just added diphthongal FLEECE and GOOSE from Gimson (2014), with the symbols based on the notation proposed for AuE in Wells (1982:596, Volume III). The symbolization of NEAR was also changed to <iə>, as Watson 2007 does not provide a justification for the choice of <iɛ> (i.e. a proof that the front offset occurs before a linking /r/ in fearing or near it, rather than just word- or utterance-finally).

On this chart, diphthongal FLEECE and GOOSE were added per Gimson, Alfred Charles (2014) Cruttenden, Alan , ed. Gimson's Pronunciation of English (8th ed.), Routledge, pp. 112, 133 ISBN: 9781444183092. . Those two diphthongs are also explicitly mentioned in Wells, John C. (1982) , Volume 2: The British Isles, Cambridge University Press, p. 372 ISBN: 0-52128540-2.

These (new) symbols are taken from AoE, p. 596, where Wells mentions them as possible transcriptions for AuE
