Many of them, no doubt,as was natural to expect, are descended fromthese great governing families. But many moreare sprung from the ranks of the country gentry,and even from the ranks of the prosperousmiddle class. As an example of this, let memention, from among other less notable names,that of the celebrated soldier of fortune, GeneralAlexander Gordon, who, after a distinguishedcareer in Russia, gained for himself the justadmiration of all military critics by his skilfulconduct of the defeated Jacobite army after thebattle of Sheriffmuir, ascottishnotesque16unse
