At the south end of the south aisle the capitals of thevaulting shafts have sculptures of a crucifix, the heavenly host, the corporalworks of mercy, the Seven Vices, and the Martyrdom of SS. Sebastian andChristopher. Over the door to the crypt or sacristy is the legend, Strongis wine; the king and women are stronger; the Truth shall conquer themall (Esdras iii. 4). There are, north and south, doorways with quasi-porches,one for men and the other for women. The lower chapel, built by Elizabeth,Countess of Buchan, at once sacristy, chapel, and chaplain-priests lodging,retains its credence and ablution drain. It measures 36.3x13.11, and 15feet high; it is reached by twenty steps. The famous Prentice pillar, likethe Prentice windows of Rouen and Lincoln, has a romantic legend attachedto it.
