| Description | Sclerosing hemangioma, originally thought to be a vascular neoplasm, is derived from primitive respiratory epithelium possibly related to type 2 pneumocytes. Sclerosing pneumocytoma appears to be a more appropriate name for this neoplasm. Approximately 80% these tumors occur in females and there is a relatively high incidence in Japan and othe far eastern countries. Four microscopic growth patterns are recognized; hemorrhagic, papillary, solid and sclerotic ; a mixture of these patterns is encountered in most cases. Clinical behavior is almost always benign. Rare cases with metastases to hilar lymph nodes have been reported. . This image shows the papillary growth pattern. |
