r parts of Asia and Africa, no longerpresents the insurmountable obstacleswhich formerly attended any attempt tostudy the rarer species. Specimens areobtained, and the untiring energy of Mr.W. T. Hornaday, seconded by his col-leagues, has already succeeded in placinga number of these curious animals on ex-hibition, which, notwithstanding theirsomnolence, are well worth a visit to theNew York Zoological Park or to othercollections of living animals in other cit-ies where they are to be found. Lemursare well worth the careful attention thatis now being given them, both with respect to theirphysical structure and their habits. If the theory of evolution is accepted, it cannot failto convince the student that we have in this orderof animals survivals of extremely ancient types ofmammals—types, it is interesting to believe, verynearly akin to those from which have arisen all exist-ing families of the order of Primates, which as thereader may remind himself, includes man as well asmonkey.
Text Appearing After Image:
SPECTER TARSIUS (TARSIUS SPECTRUM). A Prehistoric Cave Dwelling. A prehistoric cave dwelling has recently been dis-covered near Winznau, on __ Lake Lucerne, in Switzer-land. The entrance to thiscavern has been blockedfor ages by the accumula-tion of falling rocks andearth. Its existence beingknown, a party of anti-quarians had the entrancepassage into the caverncleared of obstructions, and a grotto or series ofcaves, dating to the Stoneperiod, was laid bare. Afine collection of stone im-plements, i n c 1 u d i n gknives, a x-h e a d s, andspears, gigantic shellsrudely ornamented, evi-dently drinking vesselsand dishes, was discovered. In one chamber of the cav-ern the explorers foundthe remains of the bonesof many extinct animals;while one section of thecave, which is believed tohave been the dwelling ofan important family inthe Stone age, had evident-ly served as a workshopfor the stonecutters, forhere were found manystones in the process of be-ing shaped into implements. 168 Scientific
