Portions of the apparatus underneath thecar have, where possible, been placed inside of it tofacilitate the explanation of their operation. In thecase of the motors, motor resistance, and air pumpsthis, of course, was thought to be neither feasiblenor necessary. In addition to the regular equipment the car con-tains a complete air-brake outfit for a six-car train,operated from the brake controller which is used tomake the men familiar in all details with this com-plicated mechanism. It contains, moreover, a de-fective triple valve, the presence of which the menmust detect after a certain amount of teaching. Tofacilitate the instruction there are additional parts,such as the auxiliary reservoir and the brake cylinder,with portions of the metal cut away to permit theinstructor to explain their operation fully.
