Series ofhauls taken at the same spot with similar nets fishedopen from different depths, may afford some evidenceof the horizon at which a species is most abundant. Some slight evidence on this subject has been derivedfrom closing tow nets ; but a tow net is ill adaptedfor the capture of adult fishes, and it is most unsafe toassume that such adults are to be found at the samehorizon as the larval and young forms of the speciesto which they belong. We believe that for the capture of such larval andyoung fishes as live in the upper waters of the ocean, atow net should be allowed to sink to about 100 fathoms, since existing records rather p
