asing. Deafening1.— Floors and walls may be effect-ively made sound-proof by so-called deafeningquilt. Thus the disturbing noises of one class-room will not penetrate and annoy the adjoiningroom, while classes may move through corridorsalmost unheard. To accomplish this, walls andpartitions must be carefully lined with the deaf-ener, lapped at the joints. This deafener mustnever be punctured by nails or piping exceptwhere absolutely necessary. This is to preventthe telephonic conduction of sounds through oraround the deafener and make the isolation ascomplete as possible. Deafeners should be unin-flammable, moth, vermin and insect-proof, andnon-decaying. Kindergartens, manual trainingrooms and music rooms are defectively built ifnot sound-deadened. Fire Protection.—Exits, doors, stairways,corridors and classrooms should be so arrangedthat at any time an entire building can be emptiedin three or four minutes. An explosion can, of course, only betaken as a rare exception and lire and panic mustbe dealt with. Exits, doors, stairways, corridors, etc., if prop-erly constructed, can be made fireproof or at leastguarantee a resistance of intense heat for manyminutes. Where appropriations will permit, brickor stone exteriors, concrete or tile flooring andwalls, iron staircases with asphalt treads, togetherwith stand-pipes, fire hose and fire escapes willrender a building ordinarily safe. Fire extin-guishers, pails, etc., are good, but must be usableand accessible. Fire escapes, or rather, emergency stairs,should be provided on the outer walls adjoiningcorridors.
