Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Schist from the Lower Paleozoic of New York State, USA. (~8.2 centimeters across at its widest)

Manhattan Island, in the heart of New York City (www.flickr.com/photos/photosixun/38123209764/in/photostre...), seems prima facie an unlikely place for seeing geology. However, nice rock outcrops occur in city parks, including the largest, Central Park. The bedrock in Manhattan is principally high-grade metamorphic rocks, such as gneisses, schists, and marbles. The rock seen here is a schist, a foliated, intermediate- to high-grade metamorphic rock. Schists vary considerably in appearance, but have macroscopic crystals and chunky weathering (in contrast with slate and phyllite, which have microscopic crystals and weather into thin, flat pieces or slightly chunky flat pieces). This piece is unusual in having specific provenance preserved - it's a bedrock sample from beneath Carnegie Hall (www.flickr.com/photos/edcnyc/49107647922/in/photostream/l...).

The sample consists principally of biotite mica, muscovite mica, and quartz.
