Description

English: Extract from the guide to the village of Scheveningen: Scheveningen is a fishing village of 19,300 inhabitants, now one of the most popular sea baths of the North Sea. There are more than 20,000 bathers annually, mostly Dutch and German. The neighborhood of The Hague and woods that vary the walks give it a special charm. But Scheveningen is considered a particularly expensive station.

A pedestrian paved brick embankment stretches for about 1,500 meters above the dunes, from the village south-west to the Kurhaus in the north-east. and there is at the bottom, on the side of the sea, a 25-meter wide carriage road, with sidewalk.

The Kurhaus or casino which includes a hotel (see p.297), is the meeting place for bathers. This large and beautiful establishment was built in 1884-85 by the German architects Henken-Hof and Ebert, and has been reissued since 1886 following a fire. It is more than 500 meters long, and is surrounded by covered galleries, providing shelter in case of rain. Its large hall, the "Kursaal", which is richly decorated and has a glass dome can hold 2900 people. This is where concerts take place, when they can not take place outside.
