Description Figure 2. Schematic diagram of the TGF-β signaling. (Left) The canonical (Smad) signaling involves the TGF-β-Receptor, which phosphorylates R-Smads (Smad2 and 3). Smad2/3 bind to Smad4, translocate to the nucleus and activate, among others, genes that directly regulate EMT. Smad7, negatively controls the TGF-β signaling by inhibiting R-Smads phosphorylation, by competing directly with Smad2 and 3 for the TGF-β-Receptor binding. (Right) The non-canonical (non-Smad) TGF-β signaling pathway starts from the TGF-β-Receptor and mediates the induction of EMT through the activation of several kinases
