Description

Der Bau der Burganlage wurde im 12 JH begonnen. Wer der Bauherr war, ist nicht belegt. Wahrscheinlich war es der Magdeburger Erzbischof. Möglich wäre aber auch, das die Anlage als Reichsburg gebaut wurde. Einer der Burgherren war Hermann von Stahleck. Später, etwa Mitte des 14. JH übernahm Kurtrier die Burg. Im Pfälzer Erfolge wurde die Burg durch französischen Truppen Ludwig XIV zerstört. 1855 kaufte der Amerikaner T. I. Oakley Rhinlander die Ruine und ließ die Burg teilweise wieder aufbauen. Ab 1950 ist die Stadt Oberwesel Besitzer der Anlage. Die Stadt ließ zu, dass Pächter die Anlage durch den Bau eines Hotels stark veränderten. Der Denkmalschutz spielt in der Stadtverwaltung wohl nur eine untergeordnete Rolle, Hauptsache die Kasse stimmt.
