scarlet loco, Astragalus coccineus, White Mountains, Millner Creek, Chalfant Valley drainage, elevation 1670 m (5475 ft). Spring is coming! Just about my favorite Astragalus (but there are so many!), this early-flowering, hummingbird-adapted species is centered in the Mojave Desert of the southwestern United States, and extends into the adjacent edges of the Sonoran and Great Basin deserts (though it was missed by the Intermountain Flora series). Without flowers or remnants it can be hard to distinguish from Astragalus newberryi var. castoreus, with which it overlaps in the northern part of its range. |
