[edit]DescriptionSavenake - geograph-4435756-by-Brian-Robert-Marshall.jpg |
English: Site of Savernake Low Level railway station, Savernake, Wiltshire Actually, this image shows just a part of the site where once stood the station waiting room. Savernake Low Level extended from here to the west behind the viewpoint and under the bridge providing the viewpoint and visible in this image 4435330. It opened in 1862 as part of the delightfully mis-named Berks & Hants Extension Railway (it never went anywhere near Hampshire) from Hungerford to Devizes later incorporated into the Great Western Railway. It closed to passengers in 1966, not before it had been a regular haunt of this photographer who would spend hours there trainspotting after travelling down from Swindon Old Town station. The site is now used a depot by track maintenance staff.. |
