Description

Earth Day is celebrated by a variety of events in over 192 countries every 22 April. First celebrated in 1970, the aim of Earth Day is to highlight the cause of environmental protection, including conservation. As the Earth Day Network website notes, in 1970 "20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment in massive coast-to-coast rallies… enlisting support from Republicans and Democrats, rich and poor, city slickers and farmers, tycoons and labor leaders."

In New Zealand Earth Day has been celebrated alongside similar events such as Earth Hour, building on the country's rich history of conservancy and environmentalism (more on this history can be found here: www.teara.govt.nz/en/conservation-a-history).

'Save New Zealand For Your Children' comes from a series of New Zealand Railway posters held at Archives New Zealand. The exact provenance and designer is unknown, but it was produced for or by the Forest and Bird Protection Society sometime in the 1940s. The child superimposed onto New Zealand’s endangered wilderness illustrates the need for conservation, and is a nice example of the photomontage technique employed by 1930s designers such as John Heartfield, Herbert Matter and Lester Beall.
