[edit]DescriptionSaunders Roe SR53 (50093618687).jpg |
The Saunders Roe SR53 prototype combined jet/rocket interceptor at the RAF Museum, Cosford, Shropshire 8 July 2020. Inspired by the wartime Messerschmitt Me163 Komet and Bachem Ba349 Natter rocket point defence interceptors, Saunders Roe wanted to combine their extremely quick climbing abilities enabled by their rocket motors with the greater endurance possible with a conventional jet engine. The resulting design was a compact and sleek aircraft with an intended top speed of Mach 2.2. The SR53 was originally intended to have an escape pod for the pilot where the nose of the aircraft would be blown off the fuselage in the manner of the Bachem Ba349, although in the event a conventional ejector seat was employed. Armament was to be two de Havilland Firestreak missiles. Completed in 1956 and first flown in 1957, the two prototypes displayed excellent performance and handling characteristics. However, in 1958 an aborted take-off of the second prototype resulted in it running off the runway and hitting a concrete approach light, the aircraft exploding and killing its pilot. The program was cancelled by the infamous 1957 Defence Review when the government decided there was no future in manned fighters or even combat aircraft because all future wars would be fought by guided missiles! This resulted in the crippling of the UK aircraft defence industry. Further developments of the SR53, the SR177 and SR187, were cancelled at the same time. |
