English: All Saturn V launches - created by Reubenbarton using Paint Shop Pro. The collage has been extended by Tdadamemd using Gimp with color coded bars at the top to indicate the destination of each mission:
Earth Orbit = Blue Notes: Apollo 4, 6 and Skylab were launched with no crew, with Skylab later being docked with by crews. Apollo 13 was planned as a landing mission, however it did not achieve lunar orbit, making only a circumlunar pass. The individual launch images came from the NASA Image eXchange (NIX) web site: downloaded from en.wikipedia, original uploader was Reubenbarton After Gus Grissom on the first piloted Gemini mission named his spacecraft "Molly Brown" (a sarcastic reference to The Unsinkable Molly Brown, after his Mercury spacecraft had sunk) NASA put a stop to the convention of astronauts giving their spaceships nicknames. The callsigns used were strictly the mission number. And this continued into the Apollo program through the first two piloted missions. However, the need to have separate callsigns arose for the situation where two spacecraft in the same mission would be flying independently. So to coordinate communications between the Command Module and Lunar Module, the spacecraft naming tradition was restarted beginning with Apollo 9: Spacecraft Nicknames Mission CSM/CM LM Apollo 8 (None) (N/A) Apollo 9 Gumdrop Spider Apollo 10 Charlie Brown Snoopy Apollo 11 Columbia Eagle Apollo 12 Yankee Clipper Intrepid Apollo 13 Odyssey Aquarius Apollo 14 Kitty Hawk Antares Apollo 15 Endeavour Falcon Apollo 16 Casper Orion Apollo 17 America Challenger Skylab (N/A) (N/A) |
