Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Saturday Market and the Butter Dings circa.1900

Saturday Market, showing a busy market day, and the majority of business being transacted from carts rather than from stalls as it is today. It houses not only the historic Market Cross, but also the Butter Dings Flagstones on the eastern side.
Formerly known as Bishop Dings, they have been mentioned as early as 1282 and were considered to be the central part of Saturday Market in ancient times. Butter Dings Flags are named after the country women in the market who used to stand selling butter from their baskets.
