Text Appearing Before Image: m the shock given to itby Nadir Shah, he might easily have established the complete ascendency of hisnation by mustering his forces and marching at once upon the capital Insteadof this, he suddenly withdrew into the Deccan. The only apparent inducementwas, that he might be able more effectually to watch the proceedings of hiscountrymen, Ragojee Bosla and the Guicowar of Gujerat, who were plotting hisoverthrow. Of his feelings while thus employed he liimself gave the followingaccount:— I am involved in difficulty, in debt, and in disappointments, andlike a man ready to swallow poison. Near the rajah are my enemies, and shouldI go at this time to Sattarali they will put their feet on my breast. I shouldbe thankful if I could meet death. This solemn event was nearer than heimagined, for he died shortly after, on the 28th of April, 1740, as he wasreturning to Hindoostan. The succession would liave been disputed; but fortunately forhim, Ragojee Bosk, his most formidable opponent, was absent with his army inthe Carnatic, on an expedition on which Bajee Rao had despatched him, mainlyfor the pm-pose of preventing him from plotting mischief nearer home. Onhearinor of Bajees death, he hastened back to Sattarah ; but as he came withouthis army, and found theGuicowar and the ^jr^/-nicllii, or delegate of therajah, on whose co-opera-tion he had calculated,unprepared or indisposedto second him, he wasobliged to abandon allthought of opposition,at least till a morefavourable opportunityshould arise. The deatliof Bajee Rao, and the time necessary to enable Balajee to secure himself inhis new seat, gave Mahomed Shah a short respite from actual warfare.
