Description |
English: Discovered in Council--with Belzebub & Belial—a Sketch after Fuseli One of the earliest caricatures, this drawing parodies a painting by Henry Fuseli, one of a series illustrating Milton's Paradise Lost that was first exhibited in 1799. The drawing refers to Napoleon's initial grasp of power, when he was named First Consul, the most prominent of a three-person consulate that replaced the Directory. The two demons flanking him are Emmanuel Sieyes and Roger Ducos, the other two members of the consulate. The four smaller demons flying around are English supporters of the Jacobins. Along the bottom of the print are several revolutionaries who are cheering Napoleon. The one who shouts "Vive la Babouf Ca ira" is referring to the Babeuf conspiracy of 1796 (also known as the Conspiracy of Equals), which was broken up by the government and highly publicized to give the impression there was a socialist threat to society.
