Notes Red sash worn with NZ School Cadet - NZ Junior Cadets uniform) New Zealand's first School Cadet unit set was set up circa 1864. Following the Anglo Boer War a more formal system was set up and the 1902 Education Act placed school cadets under the control of the Education Department, although the Army was also involved in training, and from 1911 equipping school cadet units. Under the Defence Act of 1919 cadet training became compulsory and remained so until Compulsory Military Training was abolished in 1932. Most units continued until another period of compulsory training, introduced in 1950 and replaced circa 1960 by a balloted system of conscripted service which ran until 1960. The following year the 1971 Defence Act established the New Zealand Cadet Force as a volunteer organisation, the responsibility of the Minister of Defence.
