Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This true-color image from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument aboard the NOAA/NASA Suomi NPP satellite shows former Typhoon Sarika (left, now a tropical storm) and Super Typhoon Haima (right) in the Northwest Pacific Ocean on October 17, 2016.

According to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, Tropical Storm Sarika is located approximately 189 nautical miles east-southeast of Hanoi, Vietnam, and has tracked northwestward at 11 miles per hour over the past six hours. The storm has maximum sustained winds of more than 60 mph with higher gusts. Super Typhoon Haima is located approximately 470 nautical miles east of Manila, Philippines, and has tracked westward at 17 mph over the past six hours. This storm has maximum sustained winds of 160 mph with higher gusts.

True-color imagery is created by combining VIIRS's color channels that are sensitive to the red, green and blue (or RGB) wavelengths of light. In addition, several other channels are often also included to cancel out atmospheric interference, such as clouds and aerosols, which can cause a blurry picture.
