Summary

[edit]
Description

Fragment of the outer sarcophagus lid of Pharaoh Ramses VI, created in Egypt about 1143 to 1136 BC. Found in Valley of the Kings, Thebes.

The New Kingdom existed from the 16th to 11th century BC, and marked the peak of Egypt's power. During this time, pharaohs were buried in massive stone sarcophagi, which surrounded a smaller wooden or gold coffin.

This sarcophagus was made of conglomerate, a coarse-grained sedimentary rock composed of granules, pebbles, cobbles, sand, and silt cemented together by calcium carbonate, iron oxide, or silica.

Ramses VI's tomb was either looted by robbers, or his coffin recycled for its precious jewels and gold by the state. The sarcophagus was destroyed at this time, and only fragments left behind. Archeologists originally thought his mummy had been destroyed, too. But it was later found in the tomb of Amenhotep II -- where priests had moved it to prevent destruction.
