Description
English: From the Drago Albani Collection.

Pentelic marble.

The relief shows the foot-washing ritual that preceded Roman weddings. The female figure can be identified as Iphigenia, a bride-to-be but in fact destined for sacrifie to allow the Greek ships to sail for Troy; according to other interpretations she may be Hippodamia or Electra. A date in the early Antonine period (AD 150-170) has been proposed on the basis of the formal characteristics and the choice of subject.
