10 THE CLASH OF NATIONS CHAPTER I THE IMMEDIATE CAUSES OF THE WAR On June 27, 1914, Francis Ferdinand, nephew of the emperorand heir to the throne of Aiistria-Hvmgary, drove, with his wife,through Sarajevo, cajiital of the Province of Bosnia, which had heenwrested from Servia by Austria. Suddenly a half-crazed Servianstudent forced his way through the protecting line of soldiers andfired a pistol with deadly aim at the royal carriage. The shots notonly slew Francis Ferdinand and his consort, but gave the immediateprovocation—or, at least, the pretext—for a still more hideous slaugh-ter; it set in motion a war that has wrecked the peace of Eurojje andembroiled the Powers in the most appalling conflict the modern worldhas known. This murder was not in itself sufficient to cause a world-catas-trophe. No one at the time could imagine its all-embracing conse-quences. Yet succeeding events have cast an illuminating light onthe dark places of political affairs, and revealed to us a Europ
